چکیده

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the existence of long-term, detailed visual memory and whether this memory can be acquired incidentally. In both experiments, participants performed an intentional (Memorization) and an incidental (Visual Search) learning task while viewing photographs of real-world scenes. A memory test for previously viewed objects from both tasks then followed. Participants were not aware that they would be tested on the scenes in the Visual Search task. In two types of memory tests for specific visual information, performance in the Visual Search condition was above chance and did not differ significantly from Memorization Task performance. Results suggest that detailed visual information is encoded regardless of task instruction.

Incidental visual memory for objects in scenes

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the existence of incidentally acquired, long-term, detailed visual memory for objects embedded in previously viewed scenes. Participants performed intentional memorization and incidental visual search learning tasks while viewing photographs of real-world scenes. A visual memory test for previously viewed objects from these scenes then followed. P...

The Effects of L1 and L2 Glossing on the Retention of L2 Vocabulary in Intentional and Incidental Settings

The current study investigated the effects of L1 and L2 glosses on L2 vocabulary retention in incidental and intentional settings. To this end, 100 intermediate Iranian female learners of English as a foreign language at Soroosh High School were given a pre-test to make sure that they do not have any prior knowledge of the target words. Reading passages with three different glossing conditions ...

To search or to like: Mapping fixations to differentiate two forms of incidental scene memory.

We employed eye-tracking to investigate how performing different tasks on scenes (e.g., intentionally memorizing them, searching for an object, evaluating aesthetic preference) can affect eye movements during encoding and subsequent scene memory. We found that scene memorability decreased after visual search (one incidental encoding task) compared to intentional memorization, and that preferenc...

Task-specific modulation of memory for object features in natural scenes

The influence of visual tasks on short and long-term memory for visual features was investigated using a change-detection paradigm. Subjects completed 2 tasks: (a) describing objects in natural images, reporting a specific property of each object when a crosshair appeared above it, and (b) viewing a modified version of each scene, and detecting which of the previously described objects had chan...

Individual differences in working memory capacity and learning: evidence from the serial reaction time task.

High and low working memory (WM) capacity individuals performed the serial reaction time task under both incidental and intentional learning conditions to determine the role of WM capacity in the learning of sequential information. WM capacity differences emerged in conditions of intentional but not incidental learning, indicating that individual differences in WM capacity occur in tasks requir...
